Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up I was reading a book the other night, and when I finished I went to write a review for it. I wondered, does this get a “thumbs up” or a “thumbs down?” Since it was a damn good book I gave it a thumbs up. But did I do right? Whenever I see […]

I’m Afraid of ;;;;;;

I’m Afraid of ;;;;;; It’s okay for writers to play with grammar. You don’t have to write in complete sentences. Not all the time. Readers know what you mean because that’s the way many people think. Writers can put periods damn near anywhere. Well. Ma.ybe. As the preceding example shows, you can’t get away with […]

Have You Kissed a Pig Today?

Your Characters Don’t Have To Be Pretty I was reading a mystery book the other night and a few pages into it, one of the main characters was introduced. The author did a fantastic job of describing how beautiful she was. I was in awe of this author’s talents. I could picture everything about her […]

We Don’t Need No Stinking Copy Editors

I have been out of town attending a funeral and didn’t have time to write a post this week, so I thought I’d repeat one I did a guest post on. This is more for writers. I hope you enjoy. I Don’t Have to Use Any Stinking Copy Editors. There has been a lot of […]

Life Isn’t Black and White

Conflicting Characters I write crime novels, mysteries, thrillers, fantasy…no matter what you call them, they’re fiction books. But just because they’re fiction doesn’t mean they’re not real. What the hell does that mean?  Some readers have written to me and asked how I make my characters seem so real. I thought about that and then […]

Book Bloggers Are Awesome

Let me repeat that—book bloggers are awesome! There was a lot of friction between book bloggers and authors last year; in fact, there was a lot of friction between authors and authors. Most of the controversy involved reviews in one form or fashion. I have been fortunate when it comes to book reviews. In the […]

A Tribute to Mothers-in-Law

Stereotypical Characters I was reading a book the other night and the author—in order to elicit sympathy for the hero—painted the mother-in-law as an extremely annoying…bitch. No other way to say it. It got me thinking about mother-in-laws and how they always seem to draw the short straw. You can’t argue it. Mothers-in-law get a […]

Giving Thanks Part II

Giving Thanks For the holiday season I thought I would try to focus a few blog posts on the “Giving Thanks” theme I started before Thanksgiving. I’m going to try to add them as additional posts and not interfere with my normal Thursday listing. With that in mind, here is my second one. Blog Tours […]

  • This blog will be a little different from many you see. Contrary to the characters in my books, I don’t really kill people, or catch those who do, so the blogs might be about reading, or writing, or animals. These are the things I have great passion for. It might also contain posts about food, or ancestry, or substance abuse. My oldest son is a great cook. My daughter is a genealogist (rootsintheboot.com) and my youngest son is a recovering drug addict. He has been clean for three years, and runs a rehab center (intoactionrecovery.com).

    I hope you enjoy the posts, and please let me know what you think.

    Ciao,

    Giacomo
