The Patient Tutor

This was originally posted on Jackie Burris’ blog, Housewife Blues and Chihuahua Stories. It was part of the Paws With a Cause bloggers fundraiser. And it’s been fun. If you’re fond of animal stories, stop by and check them out. When Jackie asked me to write something about one of my animals, I thought…sure, that’ll be […]

Who Would You Pick?

Here’s the scenario—you’re stuck on a desert island and you get to pick one person to be with you, so the question is… Who Would You Pick? Who Would I Want to be Stuck on a Desert Island With? After much consideration, I select—my wife. Your wife! Yes, my wife. I know what you guys […]

Why I Quit Drinking Coffee

Why I Quit Drinking Coffee I love coffee. I like coffee even more than wine. So imagine my distress when several of my doctors ganged up on me and warned me off of coffee, or at least the vast amount that I consume. I used to drink about 1/5–1/4 of a pound per day, which […]

Genealogy Gold Mining

I have been swamped with work as I prepare to launch my next book (March 4), so my lovely daughter agreed to let me post one of her articles on genealogy. Aliza is a syndicated columnist and feature writer for Italian American publications across the US. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the post. This article was originally published […]

Mandatory Reading

Should Schools Have Mandatory Reading Lists? I was talking to one of my younger relatives a few weeks ago, and I asked what they were reading in school. She groaned, and then said, “The Great Gatsby. It’s on our mandatory reading list.” I empathized with her. I hated The Great Gatsby. Perhaps loathed would be […]

Stepping in Shit

Shit Happens I know this seems like an odd topic for a blog post, but it’s one worth discussing. “Stepping in shit” has many meanings, like getting in trouble, or finding yourself in a bad situation. But it also means the literal definition—the real McCoy, the stinky stuff. SHIT! As you go through life you’ll […]

Coffee Dog

Coffee Dog I had no idea what I was going to write about this week, then, as I was going through my morning ritual of fixing coffee, it suddenly hit me. I was going to write about Gracie, one of our less-demanding animals. I realized I had never even thought of doing a blog on […]

Book Bloggers Are Awesome

Let me repeat that—book bloggers are awesome! There was a lot of friction between book bloggers and authors last year; in fact, there was a lot of friction between authors and authors. Most of the controversy involved reviews in one form or fashion. I have been fortunate when it comes to book reviews. In the […]

Remembering Those Who Passed

We Will Miss You We lost a lot of good friends at the sanctuary this year. Yes, we have a lot of animals left—46—but that doesn’t take away from the ones we lost. I wrote about a few of them in these posts: Luigi in Everything Has A Purpose, Cool Pig, in Toughest Decision of […]

  • This blog will be a little different from many you see. Contrary to the characters in my books, I don’t really kill people, or catch those who do, so the blogs might be about reading, or writing, or animals. These are the things I have great passion for. It might also contain posts about food, or ancestry, or substance abuse. My oldest son is a great cook. My daughter is a genealogist (rootsintheboot.com) and my youngest son is a recovering drug addict. He has been clean for three years, and runs a rehab center (intoactionrecovery.com).

I hope you enjoy the posts, and please let me know what you think.

    Ciao,
